Dangling Listicles
That great bane of contemporary media, the Listicle,
made another appearance last week. This time, it was in answer to that
nagging question: what were the 40 greatest magazine covers of the last
40 years?

#9 — Here's where most of us first heard of Fabien
Baron, the art director who launched a thousand Bodonis. This issue of
Bazaar (from 1992) was the first to reflect editor-in-chief Liz
Tilberis' renovation of the magazine into what was then the most
elegant and cutting-edge fashion publication. The cover layout echoes
everything that we loved about mid-century magazines — before the age
of multiple call-outs and celebrity portraits…
…like this 1947 Vogue with an equally oblique John Rawlings image.
#27 — This one is just an abomination. The styling is
awful and the oversell of the body painting defuses the intended
confrontation. And when I think of girls covering their breasts on
magazine covers…
…my mind immediately goes to this 1993 Rolling Stone cover with Janet
Jackson — named their "most popular cover ever," by the way.
#29 (tie) — Not only was this the first Playboy to
feature an African-American model (Darine Stern), it is also one of the
more memorable of all Playboy covers; at least in my pre-teen
experience.
#36 — You can now have a copy of this Patrick Demarchelier photograph in "handcrafted, full-bodied porcelain … that displays Diana's sweetness and serenity."
#37 (tie) — I have no idea why this was included.
#37 (tie) — This was selected only because it was the
first American women's consumer magazine with an African-American woman
(Katiti Kironde II) on its cover. The generic safety of the image turns
a potentially controversial subject into an everyday occurrence…

What are the most erotic works of art? When we posed that question to prominent artists, curators, museum directors, and art historians, many in turn posed a question of their own: what exactly is erotic art? Columbia University emeritus professor of philosophy and art critic Arthur Danto took care to distinguish between work that illustrates sexual acts and work that arouses the senses. Artist Ida Applebroog notes that men and women have very different relationships to eroticism in art. “Let’s put it this way,” she says. “I was never really aroused by fleshy figures copulating with men.” And for curator Laura Hoptman, the erotic “is about sensual pleasure,” which can come through in the work of “someone who knows how to use a brush,” as much as in, say, a graphic Tom of Finland drawing. Seduction—not quite showing it all—can enhance eroticism. “Subtlety heightens it,” says artist Shirin Neshat, “the exposure of an arm or a breast. Overtly sexual work often deletes the sense of eroticism.” Julián Zugazagoitia, director of New York’s El Museo del Barrio, suggests that visual art itself is inherently erotic. “Some of the predisposition when you’re looking at art is that of opening the senses to that particular experience,” he comments, “so there is at the core a sensuous relationship” of the viewer to the work of art.

Eroticism in art is everywhere and nowhere, a rush intrinsic to the act of looking at art and a highly subjective sensual experience. “If one exposes oneself, it’s no longer erotic,” says artist James Rosenquist. “Eroticism is a secret.” Still, our respondents managed to identify dozens of examples of intensely erotic art.

The painting that I remember having had the most vividly sexual response to was Correggio’s Jupiter and Io (ca. 1530) in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. The woman’s body and the expression on her face incarnate a state of ecstasy that is very much like the kind of abandonment you feel while making love. There’s also something very provocative about the way the picture is put together, the sensuality of the cloud that billows around Io, like a caress that you yourself feel part of.
Courbet’s Sleep (1866), in the Petit Palais, Paris. The first time I saw it, I had a kind of erotic shock. When you get up close to that painting you feel you can almost smell the women’s bodies and sense the moisture on the inside of the thigh of the woman closest to you.

Correggio’s Jupiter and Io evokes, in the strongest way, ecstasy—in the physicality, even, of painting. There’s Io seated nude and being overcome by Jupiter, who changed himself into a cloud to seduce the Greek princess. The painting shows the young woman seated in a three-quarter view seen from the back: it’s a very provocative angle. It’s as if the spectator partakes in the seduction, in the act of seeing her being enveloped by the cloud. It’s also eroticism suggested by contrast. The fact that her figure is contrasted with the gray matter of the cloud makes her pink flesh that much more alive and pulsating. Correggio sets up a kind of visual tactility. His way of painting is so extraordinarily magical. He evokes forms with sfumato, this amazing way of blurring the edges of forms with smoky shadows—this is a technical device that animates the eroticism.

Colorful and Fantastical Nudes of SomTam
- A look at the work of SomTam
is to peruse the mind of a colorful and a creative character who has an active imagination and the ability to realize his imaginings in his art. His work seems to fall into three basic categories- posed studio shots, up close and personal explorations, and enhanced photography. And it is in the last category that I think his work excels the most.
His enhanced and manipulated works have a surrealist bend. Miniaturized women straddle or caress monolithic phalluses. Naked fairy women engage in overtly sexual acts. And perhaps the most disturbing is the manipulation of the nude form into something sexual but also grotesque. Where eyes and mouths replace the vulva or the female body is compressed and manipulated in a cyclopean fashion. These images are unnerving but also compelling in their vividness and exposure.
SomTam uses as his models a selection of Asian dancers and their friends. Some of his studio shots sharply contrast his fantastical imaginations with just how ‘down to earth’ and ‘real’ his subjects appear. His up close explorations of denuded vulvas which are then softened and slightly obscured seem in some ways to bridge the gap between his realistic portrayal of girls in the studio and his fantastical created images. Still, it is those vibrant and colorful images that draw the eye more than anything else. And while the abstractions may not be to everyone’s taste, the ideas are so visually striking, it’s hard not to look away.

“I'm a highly sexual person and I put that into my paintings. In my art books there are images that may not be fetishes of mine and in those cases I'm catering to the fantasies of others.” An interview with erotic artist Bruce Colero.

How would you personally describe the nature of your art?
Throughout the years I've always tried to achieve as much realism as I could with my images. Even before I started
going digital and I was an airbrush artist - realism was always my
goal. Despite the genre, fantasy, pinup or supernatural I want the
viewer to believe that they've caught a moment of reality. I would say
my art is highly sexual in topic and my women are always perfect.
What artists, art periods, are an inspiration for your own work?
My biggest influences in the beginning were both Boris and Olivia.
Although I have a degree in art I was never excited about any of the
earlier art periods or traditional masters. If the topic doesn't
interest me - I'm not interested. Even though I can appreciate the
technical expertise of the piece it doesn't move me.
Where are your ideas coming from? Does your work reflect your own erotic fantasies & desires?
Inspiration has never been a problem with me, in fact I keep a list of upcoming images that I want to get to. The
truth of the matter is, for the most part, I paint what I like to see. I'm a highly sexual person and I put that into
my paintings. In my art books there are images that may not be fetishes
of mine and in those cases I'm catering to the fantasies of others.
What is your biggest artistic frustration? Or main struggle in the creation process?
I'm lucky in that, from beginning to end - Ill enjoy the process of an image. From that first twinge of an idea that
you mold into something greater. The design, render and ultimate postwork are all fulfilling for me. My art, like sex,
is a release for me - not frustrating in the least - otherwise why do it?
Is it easy to find places to display your work?
There are some websites that have had a problem with some of my images,
in fact I was banned from one of them for an image that was totally
taken the wrong way. However, I make no apologies for my work. If you
like my work (and seeing from the sales of my artbooks that there are
quite a few thankfully) then great. If you don't like my work, I'm not
interested in your opinion.
Im just about to release my second art book - Skin Deep - The erotic art of Bruce Colero and the printers in China had a problem with the content! I was blown away, my publisher had to scramble to find an alternate printer in Hong Kong who wasn't offended by such "graphic sexuality." My best work to date is set to be released May 08.
Can you provide a link to a website that you consider an inspiration for your own work?
Like I said, take inspiration where you get it. You are constantly surrounded by inspiration. You'll see something
out of the corner of your eye, and your imagination takes over.
Sexuality is one of the most primal of urges, how can we not be
constantly inspired?

The Expressive Bodies of Egon Schiele
Egon Schiele was an Austrian Artist who died before he really had a chance to live up to his potential but was prolific in his artwork and controversies during his 28 years. A protégée of Gustav Klimpt, one can see similarities between the two artists, but also the differences. Schiele’s work is emotive and vibrant and very much alive. The distortions in the bodies serve to enhance their vibrancy and suggest movement, emotion, and life.
Egon Schiele is known for his interest in prepubescent girls, getting thrown out of one town for behaving in a way that offended the locals, and arrested in another for seducing a girl younger than the age of consent (which was dropped and replaced with a charge of displaying pornographic images in the presence of children). He is also known for being arrogant, egotistical, and narcissistic. These qualities make him objectively interesting or even illicit as a character, and somehow one can perceive that grittiness and conflict coming through in his works.
